Children’s Health patient speaks up for Medicaid protection
Monday, July 24, 2017
When 8-year-old patient Jaylyn, pictured right, visited Capitol Hill on July 12 and July 13, she represented not only herself and Children’s Health, but more than 30 million children nationwide and 2.5 million children in Texas, who are covered by Medicaid funding. Jaylyn and her family bravely urged Congress to protect, not cut, Medicaid as part of a broad national push to address key health care needs for children through the Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day.
The Wise family met with five members of the Texas congressional delegation while in Washington, including: U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), Chairman Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas), Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas), Congressman Joe Barton (R-Texas), and Congressman Gene Green (D-Texas).
The Wise family is privately insured but qualifies for Medicaid under the medically dependent child program.
“For many years, Children’s Health has supported Family Advocacy Day by sending one of our patients and their family to Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators about issues affecting pediatric health care. In partnership with Children’s Hospital Association, families from children’s hospitals across the nation join in a collective effort to bring to life the real issues they face and how legislation can impact their children’s complex medical needs,” says Matt Moore, Vice President of Government Relations & Public Policy at Children’s Health.
Jaylyn was born with tracheoesophageal fistula, esophageal atresia, intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome. Her parents work full time to help pay for the very specialized care she needs due to the complexity of her condition, but she needs Medicaid to cover the additional expense of the more than 20 specialists she has seen.
Jaylyn and her family, from Roanoke, Texas, were featured on WJLA Good Morning Washington and Good Day Fox 4 to promote the Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day and their mission to protect Medicaid, the single largest insurer for children.
“As a health system, we are proud to be a passionate advocate by the sides of the patients and families we serve throughout North Texas,” adds Moore.
